Onake Obavva

Description

Onake Obavva is a woman warrior who fought the forces of Hyder Ali single-handedly with a pestle (‘onake’ in Kannada) in Chitradurga in the 18th century. Obavva died fighting the ‘creeping soldiers’ of Tipu Sultan’s father and protecting the fort of Chitradurga with her ‘Onake’ in the 18th century. This then gave her the name ‘Onake Obavva’.
