Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist and political ethicist who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India’s independence from British rule, and to later inspire movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Mahatma Gandhi ingeniously deployed the charkha or spinning wheel as an important tool for political emancipation, by using it as a metaphor of ‘ancient work ethics’ and as a symbol of economic and social reaction to the British Rule.
